Abstract

The automotive industry is transitioning passive vehicles into active vehicles that interact with its surroundings, and that are aware of its surroundings. The goal is to have vehicles that communicate with other vehicles, with the environment, with pedestrians. Technologies such as advanced sensors, 4G & 5G communication, data processing, and artificial intelligence are integrated into hardware and software components of the vehicles to create an interactive environment. Today, most of the cars are equipped with emergency braking, lane assist, crash recorder features. In the near future, cars will break if the car at the front brakes, and similarly, cars will automatically slow down if the average speed on the road is low because of accidents  or weather conditions.

Industry sees these advancements as a very little step towards an intelligent car, and the real objective is to create a fully autonomous vehicle. High speed and low latency communication is the key step to enable communication among vehicles. The 5G communication standard is a good candidate to be used as a communication protocol. However, 5G standards need to be modified to be used because cellular communication is designed between a base station and a mobile phone. In order to use 5G between vehicles, the 5G standard should support high speed and low latency communication between the receivers at long distances. Since the 5G telecommunication network also serves regular mobile devices, using the same network for communication among vehicles requires intelligence network resource management techniques which are currently an important research area.
