BEYKOZ UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES (SFL)
The School of Foreign Languages consists of the following three programs: “English Preparatory Program”, “Undergraduate-Associate English Program” and “Modern Languages Program”.
The English Preparatory Program is for those students who have been placed in a program whose medium of instruction is English but have failed to comply with the terms to be exempt from the English Preparatory Program as well as those who have been placed in a program whose medium of instruction is English but still wish to take the opportunity of learning English by attending the English Preparatory Program.
Undergraduate-Associate English Program is for those students who have started to take English language courses in their departments. The contents of those courses are prepared by the SFL.
Modern Languages Program is for those students who wish to take elective courses apart from English language (i.e. German, Spanish, Italian). The contents of those courses are prepared by the SFL.
EXEMPTION FROM THE ENGLISH PREPARATORY PROGRAM
The answer is no. However, the students placed in the programs whose medium of instruction is English have to successfully finish (or be exempted from) the English Preparatory Program.
The students that have enrolled for the first time in Beykoz University in a program whose medium of instruction is English have to be proficient in English. The aforementioned students need to comply with one of the conditions below to be exempt from the English Preparatory Program:
The answer is yes. If a student completes the B2 level in the English Preparatory Program with an end-of-module grade point average of 80 and above or passes the Beykoz-PROF Exam given during the academic year, s/he is deemed to have successfully completed the English Preparatory Program (therefore gets to be exempt from it from now on) and can start taking courses from their departments in the following module / semester. In addition, the students who submit documents showing that they have been successful in one of the external language proficiency exams recognized by the Senate are also entitled to take courses from their departments in the following semester.
ENGLISH PLACEMENT TEST (Beykoz-PLET) AND ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TEST (Beykoz-PROF)
1. How can I take Beykoz-PROF?
It is a PREREQUISITE for newly enrolled students who want to take the Beykoz-PROF Exam to have at least a B1 level in the English Placement Test (Beykoz-PLET). In order to take the Beykoz-PLET exam, if any students miss the Beykoz PLET exam given at the beginning of the academic year, they can take the English Score exam (prepared by the British Council) and submit the certificate indicating B1 or B2 level. Students of Beykoz University get special discount vouchers (%25) and get a certificate for 15$.
2. In which semesters and how many times is Beykoz-PROF held?
Beykoz-PROF is held five times in an academic year: Once at the beginning of the academic year, two times during the Fall Semester (Modules 1 and 2) and two times in the Spring Semester (Modules 3 and 4).
3. Can everybody take the Beykoz-PROF given at the beginning of the academic year and the ones given during the academic year?
The answer is no.
The Beykoz-PROF Exam, which is given at the beginning of the academic year, can be taken by students who are newly enrolled at the University and who have passed the Beykoz-PLET Exam at level B1 as well as students who have a level of B2 in the module they are studying. B2 is the exit level. For this reason, the student is expected to successfully complete the B2 level first.
4. How can I learn when and where I will take Beykoz-PLET?
Upon the completion of your enrolment at the university, a written statement informing the students on the location, date, and time for Beykoz-PLET as well as instructions regarding the test will be given. Moreover, all these important dates are announced on the English Preparatory Program Academic Calendar, which is available on our website.
5. How can I get detailed information on Beykoz-PLET and Beykoz-PROF?
Detailed information regarding these tests is available on the website of the School of Foreign Languages English Preparatory program.
Instructors of the English Preparatory Program will also be present at the English Preparatory Program Registration Desk to provide further explanation regarding these tests to the students. It is very important to seek information from these desks regarding the aforementioned tests upon the completion of your university registration.
6. Does Beykoz University offer courses focused on Beykoz-PLET and Beykoz-PROF?
Module 5 is given in the summer as a course program under the name of PREP-PT. However, it is only available for the students who have already completed the previous modules with us but have failed to successfully complete the English Preparatory Program.
You can also prepare for Beykoz-PLET and Beykoz-PROF by studying books specialized in preparing students for tests such as YDS, e-YDS, and TOEFL.
7. I have attended and successfully completed the English Preparatory Program as a student registered in a department whose medium of instruction is Turkish (optional participation in the English preparatory program). Will I be able to use my exemption right for the English Preparatory Program if I am placed again in Beykoz University through vertical transfer (DGS)?
As far as the programs whose medium of instruction is Turkish are concerned, the validity period of the English Preparatory Program exemption is 2 (two) years. This means that you can exercise your right of exemption from the English Preparatory Program if you have not lost any years in your program.
However, if you have been placed in a program whose medium of instruction is English through DGS and have not attended the English Preparatory Program before or have failed to submit a valid test result showing your proficiency in English, then you will have to meet the conditions as the other students.
ABOUT THE ENGLISH PREPARATORY PROGRAM
1. Who can participate in the English Preparatory Program lessons?
Attending the English Preparatory Program lessons is compulsory for all the students who are registered in departments in which the medium of instruction is English and have failed to fulfill English Preparatory Program exemption conditions.

(They will be placed within the optional participation quota.)
2. Does the English Preparatory Program offer a yearly system?
The answer is no.
The English Preparatory Program offers a “modular system” composed of 5 Modules: Fall Semester (Modules 1-2), Spring Semester (Modules 3-4), and Summer School (Module 5, which requires extra payment and is optional).
Modules 1,2,3, and 4 each last for 8 weeks while the period of study for Module 5 is approximately 6-8 weeks.
3. At which level will I start the academic year in the English Preparatory Program?
Held at the beginning of the academic year and compulsory for all the students to take, Beykoz-PLET determines your level of English and its result will be sufficient to indicate which class you need to be placed in the English Preparatory Program.

ATTENDANCE AND SUBMISSION OF MEDICAL REPORTS
1. How many class hours are there in the English Preparatory Program per week?
English Preparatory Program students attend 20 hours of in-class lessons depending on their levels. Apart from the in-class lessons, the students are given online assignments. Moreover, the students are given the opportunity to receive additional materials and academic support one-on-one and/or as a group through the Student Academic Counselling Unit (ACUT).
2. Is attendance in the classes mandatory?
The answer is yes.
In order to be successful in a module, it is necessary to “attend at least 80% of all the classes” and get the required minimum score from the exams given. Students who keep failing to show up in their classes will obviously face problems in successfully completing the ongoing module. It is up to the students to make up for any classes they have missed.
3. Do I have a right of absenteeism?
"Absenteeism" should be regarded not as a right but rather as an obligation for the days on which an excuse document cannot be obtained. Students are expected not to be absent from classes unless they have to and/or it is urgent for them to do so. Students are responsible for keeping track of their absenteeism through the Student Information System (OIS).
4. What happens if I exceed the absenteeism limit?
The students who exceed the 20% absenteeism limit in a module without any excuse documents recognized by the Senate will lose their right to take the final exam given at the end of each module.
The students who exceed the absenteeism limit by 40% and cannot submit any valid excuse documents will fail the relevant module and lose their right to attend classes.
The students that exceed the absenteeism limit by 30% or more because of their medical conditions have to submit their medical health reports approved by a medical council from a state hospital within the medical health report/excuse document submission period. (For detailed information please see Beykoz University English Preparatory Program Regulations Article 17).
5. Does my absenteeism in a module have an effect on another module and/or the academic year?
The answer is no.
Absenteeism in one module is not transferred to the next module. Absenteeism is renewed in every new module.
6. When and where should I submit my absence excuse document?
Any excuse document has to be submitted to the English Preparatory Program Student Affairs Office within 5 (five) work days following the final date of the excuse. However, any excuse document to be submitted for taking a make-up exam is required to be submitted without waiting for the aforementioned document submission due dates and must be submitted as soon as possible, which is at least one day before the make-up exam.
7. When the academic year starts, will students be informed about the English Preparatory Program?
The answer is yes.
At the beginning of each academic year, an “English Preparatory Program Orientation” is organized to offer detailed information to students and to answer any questions they have on their minds. Attendance at this orientation is COMPULSORY.
STUDENT INFORMATION SYSTEM (OIS)
1. Where can I learn about my absenteeism and exam scores?
You can learn that information by logging into the Student Information System (OIS).
2. How can I log into the Student Information System (OIS)?
