December in the Library: Alexandre Dumas

Alexandre Dumas was born in France on July 24, 1802. The reason his name is mentioned with the word "father" is because he has a son with the same name and who is also a writer. Because he lost his father at an early age, he did not receive enough education and went to Paris at a young age to make a living. He had planned to become a lawyer, but began working in the service of Louis-Phlippe, the future King of France, Duke of Orleans. His writing began in 1826 with a small story. He was then famous for his play "Henri III and his Palace", and his plays received great attention during his lifetime, but the author achieved his permanence with historical adventure novels. In 16th and 17th century. He aimed to write exciting stories set in the 16th and 17th centuries. He was one of the most efficient and beloved writers of the 19th century. Dumas's two most famous books are "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "The Three Musketeers". He has written nearly 300 adventure novels. He died on 5 December 1870 near Dieppe in upper Normandy, France.
