He was born in Manisa on June 27, 1921. He died in Istanbul on October 9, 1989. His real name is Yusuf Ziya Atılgan. He also used the signatures "Nevzat Çorum" and "Ziya Atılgan" in his writings. He graduated from Manisa Secondary School, Balikesir High School as a free boarder and the Department of Turkish Language and Literature at Istanbul University Faculty of Literature, where he continued as a military student after his second year. At that time, he taught literature at Maltepe Military High School in Akşehir. After 1980, he worked as aconsultant and translator at Milliyet Publications and briefly as an editor at Can Publications. He died of a heart attack at his home in Moda before completing his novel "Canistan". He was buried in the Nightingale Cemetery in Uskudar, Istanbul. In 1990, Hacırahmanlı Municipality established "Yusuf Atılgan Public Library". The articles and interviews written about him and the articles dedicated to him were compiled by some "Friends of The Thursday" in the book "Gift to Yusuf Atılgan" after his death. The most notable element in his works is his ability to observe. Atılgan has created quite remarkable types in its novels by expressing his observational power in words. The types created by Atılgan are people who suffer from social isolation in general. Living in their own loneliness, they are also obsessive individuals. Yusuf Atılgan often brings this state of obsessiveness to the degree of perversion. Yusuf Atilgan has not written many works in his life, but even the three novels he has written in particular have been enough to show the magnitude of his writing. His novels are among the rare works that are still being printed, going beyond its age. With both his language and the deep types he creates, Yusuf Atılgan remains among the most important figures in the literary world. At the same time, the novel "Anayurt Oteli" was made into a movie by Omer Kavur in 1987.
