SS Talks: Fieldwork in Polarized Contexts: Challenges in Accessing, Data Collection and Positionality

Dr. Bilge Yabancı

Bilge Yabanci is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global fellow at Northwestern University and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and runs the Project ‘Designing Resonant Frames: How to Effectively Communicate about the Rights and Inclusion of Immigrants and Refugees?’ funded by the European Commission Horizon Europe Program. She researches autocratization and democratic backsliding and the role of social movements and civil society in such contexts, particularly focusing on gender, youth, labor, migrant/refugee, and diaspora organizations. Her research also extends into populism and the role of affect and performance in political mobilization. She is the author of the forthcoming book Civil Society and Autocratisation Cooptation, Repression and Contestation in Turkey (Edinburg Univ. Pr, 2025) and published in Government and Opposition, Ethnopolitics, Journal of Civil Society, British J. of Middle Eastern Studies, Politics, Religion & Ideology.
