Engineering Approach to Management Sciences

Businesses that successfully survive in national, regional and international markets today need to have creative and innovative human resources with long-sightedness and that have strong knowledge, skills and are creative and innovative.

Today's businesses need strong leaders and managers who can think analytically, who are well-equipped in engineering subjects such as mathematical modeling, operations research, in other words, who approach engineering problems, such as finance, marketing, and human resources.

Who is a Management Engineer?

In today's competitive environment, the methods used to improve efficiency, customer satisfaction and profit rates in industry, service, information and infrastructure systems are gaining importance in all engineering branches at an increasing speed. Management Engineering emphasizes the importance of management knowledge and skills in engineering education, and therefore the program curriculum is designed to educate graduates who will design, organize and improve integrated and complex systems that include people, materials, capital, energy, information and technology, and support corporate culture in this direction. In addition, it is aimed to acquire the knowledge, ability and skills required for understanding, designing and implementing management systems to be used in increasing productivity and efficiency in these systems, and to obtain complex engineering and management information

in developing solutions for production, product development and service delivery.

What Does a Management Engineer Do?

Business engineers design, build, develop and manage complex systems, including human, material, machinery, capital, information, energy and technology components, producing goods and services from an integrated perspective.

Where Does a Business Engineer Work?

Business engineers can work in any field, from production of all types of goods and services to telecommunications, banking to health, transportation to energy, brand management to tourism, education to consulting, logistics to software.

Management Engineering Education

The duration of management engineering education is four years. In the first year of education, basic courses such as physics, mathematics, computer programming are given. In the following years, basic courses of business engineering and application areas are included.

The following courses are included in Beykoz University's management engineering bachelor program:

Physics and Mathematics (Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Probability Theory and Statistics, Discrete Mathematics)

  • Programming
  • Economy
  • Statistics
  • Management and Organization
  • Management Accounting
  • Cost Accounting
  • Human Resources Management
  • Marketing
  • Finance
  • Production Management
  • Quality Management
  • Project Management
  • System Analysis
  • Management Information Systems
  • Operations Research
  • E-Commerce
  • Business Law
  • The program also includes elective courses.

Many of the courses in the management engineering program are common with the management program and the industrial engineering program. The management engineering program also includes engineering courses such as basic engineering courses, programming, information systems, and operations research, compared to the operating program. In contrast, the business engineering program is closer to the business field compared to the industrial engineering program and includes business courses such as management accounting, human resource management, marketing, finance.

The reason why business engineering is presented as a separate program from industrial engineering and business administration is because there is a need for an engineering approach to enter the complex field of business today, and since industrial engineering is not close enough to the field of business administration, it cannot meet this need.

Common Courses in the First Year of Engineering Programs

The first years of engineering programs at Beykoz University are common except one course, that is, it consists of the same courses. The commonness of the first year provides the student with the opportunity to transfer horizontally at the end of the first year without loss of lesson. Thus, a student who is not satisfied with his preference in the selection period of entering the university can transfer to another engineering department without any loss.

The fact that the first years of engineering programs are common makes it easy to do minor and double major programs in engineering programs.

Competence Development Program

Today, the business world expects university graduates to enter the business life by acquiring some critical competencies as well as theoretical knowledge in their fields. With the “Competency Development Program” of our university, we aim for our students to graduate by developing themselves in the basic and managerial 14 Competencies required by the 21st century business world as well as the knowledge of the field they study. In this way, our engineers and architects, who graduate from our faculty, are embarked on the business world, along with the critical fundamental and managerial competencies they have gained during their education life and start their careers with a great advantage.

Internship and Workplace

Internships and work in the workplace are important for management engineering education. The education model of Beykoz University is based on working in a workplace in the field where the last period of the four-year undergraduate education consists of eight terms. Thus, when the student graduates, he starts his business life one step ahead.

English

It is important for Management Engineers to learn English in order to be able to follow developments in their profession, to work for international companies and to communicate with abroad. For this reason, Beykoz University's management engineering program is in English.

Diploma and Title Received by Management Engineering Education

Those who successfully complete their education are provided with the Bachelor Diploma for Management Engineering and the title of Management Engineer.

Master’s and Doctorate

Those who study business engineering can continue their education at master's and doctorate level. Master's students receive the title of Engineer MSC. Those who complete their doctorate become researchers and academicians. It can be mastered in various fields of management engineering at the master's and doctorate level.

Working Fields of the Management Engineers

The working fields of management engineers, who work in a team-focused, solution-oriented manner, are usually office environments.

How Much Does a Management Engineer Earn?

As in all professions, the earnings of management engineers change according to the work done, the institution worked, the work intensity, the work experience and similar criteria. But management engineers often earn better than most professions.

Where Does a Management Engineer Work?

The management engineer can work in business analysis, system design, human resources, marketing and sales, procurement, foreign trade, e-commerce and many more.

Who Should Prefer Management Engineering?

Those who want to choose this profession should be persons who can constantly renew and improve themselves, have design skills, have strong logic, are patient, careful, can be a part of team work, and can create solution steps by dividing problems into pieces.

Does it Matter that the Department is in English?

Yes. Good command of English is very important in management engineering. In order to be able to follow the developments in the field of management engineering and get a chance to work in global companies, they must learn English.

What is the Difference Between Management Engineering and Industrial Engineering?

Management engineering and industrial engineering are two engineering disciplines that contain similarities due to the intersection of their fields. Management engineering involves understanding the engineering relations of basic management functions with the human element in all kinds of organizations, especially production and service businesses, and understanding the structure of business systems and integrating these systems with different technological environments.

Industrial engineering includes designing, developing, implementing and improving production and service systems that include people, materials, information, equipment and energy. The training provided in this context should include in-depth teaching of appropriate analytical, computational and experimental methods. Based on the comparison of these two definitions, we can say that management engineering is more management and business oriented than industrial engineering, and industrial engineering is more analysis and computational.

What is the Difference Between Management Engineering and Business Administration?

Business administration programs train operators with knowledge of many business functions, from production to marketing, from human resources management to accounting, from economy to finance, to perform jobs in the production and service sector. Management engineering educates engineers who focus on the analysis of all types of operating systems with various methods and their design as a whole, thereby improving businesses.

In summary, while the field of operation aims to operate the existing systems successfully, management engineering makes analysis and design beyond the operation of these systems. In other words, the management engineer introduces the engineering approach, which means analysis and design, to the field of business.
